NRDC successfully held an international workshop titled “Demand Response as Grid Resources to Bid into Market” in Shanghai, on March 15. Shanghai successfully implemented China’s first demand response (DR) pilot program in 2014 and 2015. With support from the China Prosperity Fund, NRDC has been working with Shanghai DR program participants to develop more diversified demand side resources and explore DR’s role in increasing grid flexibility and efficiency. To help Shanghai develop a sustainable DR market mechanism, we invited experts from the U.S. and U.K. to share their perspectives and insights on demand response market mechanism in the U.S., DR development in EU countries, and how laws and regulations support DR. the local aggregators also shared their experiences and lessons learned in the past two years. Over 70 participants from Shanghai local government, companies and research institutes, as well as Jiangsu and Hebei attended the meeting and had robust discussion with the experts on DR’s market potential in Shanghai and China. NRDC will continue work with our partners to explore DR’s value, and replicate Shanghai’s success in other Chinese cities.
